Time to get in touch with Tony, your freelance pharmacist.
Tony Howarth, Freelance Pharmacist
Why Pharmacist?
Realise that every prescription a pharmacist handles has two parts. Both technical (someone has to count the pills) and educational (most jurisdictions have a legal requirement that the patient be educated about the medication or condition). Now it’s easy to see every pharmacist always has been teaching and adapting that teaching to meet the needs of the person they are trying to communicate with. Pharmacists are the natural freelancers of the healthcare world. Well beyond counting are the number of patients who ask “What did the Doctor mean by…?” And yes, the expectation is that they leave actually understanding the topic.
Does that translate to good writing?
Let me show you. Before and during his PhD work, Tony authored content at PharmWeb – the first ever pharmacy website, provided at the University of Manchester (and now shut down). After the PhD thesis, Tony’s first significant piece of writing was the Lloyds Pharmacy training manuals for use in nursing homes. Then came many blog posts for his first aid company as well as written information for course students to help them remember key points. As a teacher/trainer in first aid, writing for others came naturally – for example a series of articles for the AFCN including this piece on Cardiac Events. And as a final sample, most of this website was written by Tony.
Background
After studying to become a pharmacist, Tony researched a PhD in pharmacy and informatics. Back in the day when most of the public saw the Internet as a new thing, Tony was researching what information was available and if it was trustworthy. Naturally this covered what patients/public understand and how to write materials they will learn from and remember.
Since the he’s worked in community and hospital pharmacies both in the UK and in Canada where he now lives. As part of his work as a pharmacy manager Tony also did a Certificate In Business Management (the first year of an MBA). When not working as a pharmacist, Tony also offers First Aid & CPR/AED training courses through the Canadian Red Cross.
